Choosing The Best Theodolite

By Carey Bourdier

There are many different types of useful optical instruments, including clinometers, inclinometers and theodolites. Theodolites are one of the main tools used by surveyors, but many other professionals also use this tool, including aerospace engineers and even the meteorologists that forecast our weather. The theodolite is used to measure angles, and it can do so in the horizontal plane as well as the vertical plane.

All theodolites are not the same and there are different kinds designed for different purposes. For instance, when the FAA needs to calibrate navigation aids such as VORTAC, MLS, TACAN or ILS, one of the devices that they will use is a telemetering theodolite. This is just one type of theodolite and obviously, it is primarily used in relation to aircraft.

If you need to measure azimuth and angles of elevation for moving objects, such as aircraft, ships or perhaps a weather balloon or pilot balloon, then you might consider some type of observation theodolite. In some cases, this theodolite will be fixed and mounted in a permanent place and in some cases, you will need to be able to move it to various locations. These observation theodolites sometimes are called pibal theodolites, which stands for pilot balloon observation theodolites; however, not all observation theodolites are pibal theodolites.

There are quite a few different types of meteorological theodolites. For instance, Warren Knight produces several varieties including a compact electronic meteorological theodolite system. This system quickly can record azimuth and elevation angles in a variety of weather conditions. Of course, meteorologists also have to use a wide variety of other equipment including thermometers, barometers, radar and much more.

Generally, the transit theodolite is the one with which people tend to be the most familiar. These are used for hundreds of different surveying and engineering tasks. This includes determining land boundaries and in many types of construction engineering. A transit theodolite can be used to ensure that roads, bridges, railways and skyscrapers are well constructed and safe.

When you combine a theodolite with a distance meter, you get another helpful device known as a total station. This includes an electronic distance meter and an electronic transit theodolite. These total stations provide excellent, highly accurate measurements and are particularly useful when you need to measure underground. This is why the total station is an optical instrument very commonly used by mining engineers around the world.
