Facts About Star Wars Action Figures

By Raymond Price

Before the seventh installment of the star wars series of movies had even been released BB-8 the orange droid was an instant hit. The small orange robot was featured in trailers prior to the film being shown to the public. The movie fans can now purchase their own BB-8 model which is available in the latest batch of star wars action figures and toys.

Following the release of the original movie in 1977, the science fiction series has become one of the best loved of all time. Despite episode 1 actually being episode 4, the fans loved the characters and were more than happy when after 20 years the series was resurrected. Every one of the movies had characters that were familiar as well as new villains to hate and new heroes to love.

The best known droids, R2-D2 and the inept but lovable C-3PO, have been with viewers since the beginning and are firm favorites. Collectibles from the original movie release are now trading for large sums of money in mint condition. A carded C-3PO can fetch well over $300 with the quirky R2-D2 showing his popularity by exceeding $400 for one of the earliest examples.

The original series of action figures was produced by Kenner and it is these "earlybird" toys that are most sought after by collectors. When purchasing one of the rarer models, the packaging is of utmost importance. Without packaging the figure can be worth just a few dollars and not truly collectible.

This first set of toys had cardboard backing with pictures of other characters on the back. These have become known as 12 backs and are extremely collectible for enthusiasts. With the release of other movies in the series, 21 backs as they are known became available but these are far less valuable than the early sets.

Following the purchase of Kenner by Hasbro, all the toys are now licensed through Disney, so modern collectors can continue to expand to include the new monsters and robots. A true fan could stage their own version of the movies in miniature thanks to the range on offer. Most popular are the small die cast models which make great presents for fans of all ages.

Those wishing to have a fully animated model can opt for one of the ones which talk and are interactive. Once again the popularity of the adorable BB-8 makes it a great buy as it is sure to be highly sought after by future generations of enthusiasts. It has been reported that there is at least one homemade fully functioning BB-8 but this is not likely to ever come onto to the market.

There are numerous sites on the internet where these collectible items can be purchased. Auction sites and those specializing in movie items are a great place to find that special Luke Skywalker with the double telescoping light saber or a vintage Snaggletooth. If you are planning to purchase a really rare item then make sure to do plenty of research before spending hundreds or thousands of dollars. Reputable dealers should be able to show authenticity and be happy to answer any questions you have about the item. Also if it is being couriered to you then take out ample insurance in case your package is lost or damaged.
