What You Should Know About Color Theory Paintings

By Raymond Gibson

All through history, paintings have been used in preserving memories. Although people are not as keen on observation nowadays, paintings are still a big part of our world. They are a source of income as people purchase them for purposes of decoration. They are also hobbies for different people. So for an aspiring painter or an eager learner this articles highlight information about color theory paintings.

However, you can mix these primary colors to come up with a whole new color. Blue and red brews purple, red and yellow make orange, while yellow and blue make green. These are known as secondary colors. These secondary colors will appear in different shades depending on the amounts and ratio used in mixing the primary colors.

As much as primary colors are original and cannot be made from mixing other colors, they also come in different shades. This means there are diverse kinds of reds, yellows, and blues. Some shades are considered warm while others are cool. For example, a certain kind of red may appear dull but will always be considered warmer than any shade of blue.

Mixing two primary colors will result in a secondary color. The intensity and effect of the color will depend on the ratio of mixing and the colors used in forming the secondary color. For example, red and yellow forms orange. If the yellow is more than the red, the orange will be yellowish while if the red is more than the yellow the orange will appear reddish.

Although there is the option of mixing up colors instead of purchasing them, you should not entirely neglect to buy certain shades of color. This is because there are colors that can only be bought and cannot come up even when mixing is done. Another reason is the need to make the painting look similar in one way or the other. You may mix in different ratios and end up using up different shades.

Tertiary colors include browns and greys. They can be created by mixing all the primary colors or a primary color with a secondary color. The shade of grey or brown you get depends on which colors you mixed and in what amounts. As pointed out before, the ratio of mixing goes a long way in determining the shade acquired in the long run.

There is also the factor of complimentary colors. These complementary colors are the color left out by mixing two primary colors. You may be wondering what is the use or importance of a complimentary color. These are used to bring out a brightness and intensity in a portrait. If not used together the painting may become dull.

Lastly, you should keep a record of all of your discoveries. You should make a chart of all the mixing you have made and their result. You should also come up with a chart of colors that are opaque or transparent. This will enable you to save time when you start painting as you do not have to conduct a test before you paint.
