How A Rappelling Fundraiser Works

By Maria Perry

Fundraisers are charity events held in order to encourage people or sponsors to extend their voluntary donations to support a certain cause. When marketed, presented, and done the right way, a fundraising event can be of great help to help fund and raise awareness on any specific cause. Currently, promoters have been coming up with more creative ideas for these events. One of these ideas is the rappelling fundraiser.

When support from federal sources is no longer available, promoters try to get creative. The most popular type of fundraiser is the fun run and for a good reason. In joining 3k, 5k, 10k, 21k, and 42k races, people do not only get to tick one thing off their bucket list, but they also have the motivation to run for a cause. Another example of an extremely successful fundraiser was the ice bucket challenge for ALS in 2014.

The challenge quickly gained popularity after celebrities joined in on the event and shared their videos on social media. A bucket filled with ice and cold water is had to be poured over the heads of participants and if they decline the challenge, they had to donate to the cause, which was Lou Gehrigs disease. Participants could even tag three other people to participate in the challenge.

Because of the participation of famous celebrities and the popularity it held on social media, the challenge was extremely successful in getting people to talk about ALS. Several newspapers, magazines, and news outlets even documented this novel idea for a fundraiser. It was so successful that it the challenge once again made its rounds on social media in 2015.

Both funds and awareness were raised for the disease. Obviously, these events are not a piece of cake to organize since there are many things to consider such as hiring professionals, recruiting participants, promotion and marketing, and securing permits. To guarantee success and publicity, some of these charity events are shaped in the form of stunts.

The fundraiser is included among the list of these fairly new gimmicks. Strapped to a harness, participants will rappel along a building several stories high. With or without the media personnel filming the event, onlookers from streets below are easily drawn to watching the daredevil participants take on the stunt.

Of course, safety precautions are the primary concern in events like this. Reliable equipment and training seminars are facilitated by professionals to teach willing participants the proper guidelines before the day of the event. Apart from gaining the attention of adventurous people, it is also a perfect concept for a publicized charity event.

Of course, since it the stakes are higher especially when it is publicly documented, organizers will ensure the smooth flow of events and double check all safety precautions. First off, organizers will have to find a suitable building and secure licenses and permission to carry out the stunt in the establishment. Supporters will then be invited to rappel or walk down the side of the building.

To register, participants are encouraged to donate to a specific cause. Minimum amounts are usually at a thousand dollars. The exhilarating experience will be for the facilitation and funding of an important cause. Over the Edge is one of the primary organizations conducting this unique type of fundraiser. In the span of only a few years, over thirty million dollars has been raised.
