Making Your Nursing Drug Cards

By Deanne Shepard

Most of the nursing students are using a drug card to know and learn how most of the drugs are administered and used. They also learn dosage and common side effects of the drugs used. Although most of the drug cards are purchased, almost all nursing students are required to create their own cards. This is a helpful way for them to understand better and remember a certain detail and statistics.

Before you get started, you have to learn some important information from your instructor and the data that should be included to your project. By creating nursing drug cards, basic information is usually applicable. However, some teachers would require to add other information. If your teacher explains the necessary requirements needed, jot down all important data that could be included with your project.

Prepare all necessary tools, supplies and materials. You only need markers, stack of note cards and highlighters. Your teacher will give you the appropriate size and the certain quantity of notes for the information. If you have some plans, you better jot it down with your pencil. Using a pencil is essential, so that you can easily erase and replace some data if necessary.

You may also need markers and highlighters. Better use several colors of markers so you can create a color coding to your cards. Each information may be colored with a specific color. You may also gather some textbooks and other professional sources that you need when making your own medical card to obtain a certain information.

You may also write all the generic or trade names for every drug on the note card. This information includes the correct pronunciations. However, it is not so important to color the information. You just need to use the color that you like or even use a black color. Flip each card and write all important details at the back.

You may write again the codes at the top portion of the cards. Write all the data or statistics in a neat, tidy and clean manner. You can also refer a certain requirements coming from your teacher. The most common details are the drug classifications, dosage, common side effects, therapeutic effects, drug actions and the nursing implications.

This side must be color coded. You may use any colors that highlight the information. For example, you color the word dosage with a pink color and so on. If you do not have a highlighter, then you can use any kind of markers to make an outline box in the sections.

You continue writing the required medicines. Your instructor will also give you the lists needed. If not, then you should assess the patients and lean the type of drugs provided to them After that, you may create a card with the drugs you have been given to them. You may also check the side effects after taking the drugs.

Once you are done gathering all the details and information, then it is time to study all the gathered statistics. You have to check yourself if you learn something from your data gathering and while making your note cards. This is a good way to measure if you have fully understood the whole process.
