First things first, be sure that you are not in an awkward or difficult position when you are dealing with your machine. One key thing to remember is sitting straight and by that, you also have to be in a straight line with your apparatus. This will help you in sewing straighter and better.

When you own a hand me down sewing equipment, it may be hard for you to find it as old models do not have one, but try to look for a seam allowance indicator on the foot plate. Using this as a guide can help you get the right amount of seam allowance as well as sew straighter. But if you cannot find one on your machine, worry not.

In doing so, you can use a washi, masking, or painters tape. You can tape them on the foot plate of the machine and use them both as a marker for allowance as well to help you sew straight. This way it will be easier for you to sew and you also have to option to add as many allowance measurements as you like.

A lot of people do this mistake often and that is watching the needle while they are sewing. If you look at the needle, chances are, you will no longer notice or be able to follow the straight line marked by your tape or markings. Such habit can also hurt your eye and head in the long run as the needle movement may cause you to be dizzy.

If it really is hard for you to stay on track, you can use fabric markers that wash off with water. Such mark will be easier to notice as they are more visible. Just keep in mind to test such markers on a piece of fabric before using it so that you do not end up with a permanently marked finished product.

Finally, remember that your foot is controlling the machine. Some always forgets this and panic when the machine goes too fast. Well, newsflash, your foot is on the pedal so relax and take it slow, because there is absolutely no need to rush as doing so may only result to wavy and untidy sewing marks.

Oftentimes, those that seem easiest to do are actually the hardest. However, when you are knowledgeable of pointers, you can do better in trying. Learn the importance of practice because it will guide you to perfect the craft in the future.
