By Johnathan Black

The price of produce is absolutely going through the roof as the economy continues to tank. A lot of families cannot afford to eat healthy these days and many are turning to organic gardening to grow delicious and healthy food. Whatever your reasons for wanting to go organic are, you need to check out this article.

Selecting bulbs. Most bulbs are sold during their dormant period. Buy them as early as possible before they start to produce roots. Most spring flowering bulbs will begin to grow roots by early fall, and by planting them early, you will ensure that they have time to establish themselves. Bulbs will deteriorate if kept out of the ground too long. Don't buy any bulb that is soft or mushy, or appears to be diseased.

Don't bother with expensive chemicals if your plants start to sport powdery mildew. Instead, combine baking soda with water and liquid soap. You then want to spray this mixture on your plants one time a week until you notice the mildew disappear. No damage will occur to your plants, and the baking soda is mild and efficient.

Not only is gardening a great way to grow your own food, but you can also grow your own drink. You can grow apple mint to make a delicious tea or rhubarb stalk to make a tart alternative to lemonade. You should also can or freeze your berries and fruits to make them into soda, hard cider, or wines.

Make sure your pot is the right size for your plant. If the pot is too small, the plant's roots may not have enough room to grow. The roots will become "root bound", stop growing, and begin to suffocate. The size of the root system can determine the size of your plant and yield.

Diversify the types of plants you grow in your garden. If you only grow one type of plant in your garden and it gets infected with a disease, your whole garden could be wiped out. Also, if you are only growing tomato plants, remember that just 14 tomato plants can yield a year's supply of tomatoes for two people.

Growing an organic garden does not take more effort than any other type of garden. In fact, because organic gardening emphasizes on what nature provides, plants will not need to rely on artificial means to thrive, thus saving you time in applying chemicals. Try organic gardening in your home; you will be impressed by the results.
