Finding The Right Samoan Hymn Book

By Karen Barnes

There are many traditional instruments that can be used to make a more cultural and full experience. One of the popular instruments often accompanies the music in a Samoan hymn book is called the fala. This is one that looks like a rolled up mat which the player beats with sticks in order to make beautiful music.

Soundingboards are instruments that have been used for a long time in this sort of a situation and have a sound that is both unique and beautiful. There are often times when a person will read some scripture solo, which can sometimes be a lot of pressure on the person reading if there are no instruments backing her or him up. This is generally the time when people make use of this beautiful instrument.

Anyone who has read the Lord of the Flies or seen the Little Mermaid will be able to tell you what a conch shell is and can probably imagine the sound that they make even if they have not heard it already. This is not only a popular seashell that is depicted a lot in popular culture but is also a traditional instrument. The general use of this shell is to signal something.

If you are on a budget looking for instruments to accompany you, you might consider getting a few of the smaller ones because you can get a lot of bang for your buck considering how much having these little things adds. Adding a lot of cultural feel while remaining inexpensive, there is a lot of value there. You might try the panpipe, nose flute, or jaw harp.

Whenever you are singing in a choral group, it is sometimes hard to get a feel for the rhythm of the music. That is where the drums come in. They are not used a lot, and the pate is a good slit drum pick for those who are looking for this type of addition to their arrangement.

Though it is not one of the most popular picks nowadays, the fala is a type of drum that can be used in this type of ensemble. It follows the same rhythms as the more modern drums do. If you do not have a pate, this is still a viable option for you.

Ever since the 1830s, missionaries have been traveling to Samoa in order to make sure the people who live there knew who Jesus was and that he died on the cross for their sins, bringing all sorts of influence with them. Among these were cultural influences that quickly worked their way into the music. Now there are so many hymns out there that it is impossible to know them all.

It is wonderful to sing in a choir, especially when the songs are praising the Lord. It is unfortunate though that Christianity's influence on the people of Somoa had to make it so they did not want to make as much use of the instruments that their ancestors had made and used for centuries. Nowadays, people can respect both of these in their music.
