Missouri Public Records

The Freedom of Information Act has mandated the government of each state to open the access of the personal documents of its residents. The Local residents of Missouri can request for a copy of any of the Missouri Public Record.

Birth, marriage, death and divorce records of Missouri belong to the family related documents of the state. Police and other reports that have been issued by any law enforcing agencies of Missouri are categorized under the criminal records of the state. Family related documents would have details about the type of document it is. Birth certificates would have details about when and where an individual was born. It is the same for death certificates, only it is about the death of an individual. Marriage certificates would have details about the marriage of a couple while divorce certificates have information on the separation of the couple. As the name implies, Criminal records have details about the crimes and misdemeanors committed by an individual.

Each of the documents has its own specific use. Family related documents are the source of information for genealogy research. It has information that is vital in updating the family history records. These documents are also important documents used when processing government transactions. It can be used as proof of identity or to process any insurance requests or claims. Marriage and divorce certificates can also be used to verify the marital status of an individual which is one of the things required when conducting a background check.

The documents may be considered as public documents but, access to it is limited only to the people who own the document and their immediate family. In order to request for a retrieval of any of the documents, one has to have the basic details of the file that is being requested. Certain fees need to be paid but it will depend on the type of document requested. There is also certain period or year where the state of Missouri may not have a copy of the documents from a given year.

The office of the Department of Health under the Vital Records Section manages the family records of the state while the Criminal Justice Information Services Division is the one responsible for keeping the criminal records of the state. The said offices are where the documents can be obtained. The local county offices where the event has been originally registered can also provide the document. Mail requests can also be sent but it can take days before the result of the search can be obtained. The long wait can be avoided by requesting the documents online.

The Internet now allows the retrieval of the public documents of Missouri easier. With this the residents can save time and energy in requesting for the documents. A free government public records search can be done through some websites that lets its users test out their system before letting them pay.
