Enjoying The Fort Myers Climate To The Fullest

By Jony Mozen

The Sunshine State is probably the most aptly nicknamed of the United States of America. It's no wonder that it's one of the most popular holiday destinations in the US and that so many people choose to relocate here. The sunny and pleasant Fort Myers climate has made this the Florida city of choice for countless people who love spending time outside and being active.

Fort Myers is one of the principal cities in southwest Florida. Its central location makes it the perfect base from which to explore the theme parks of Orlando, the nightlife of Miami, the Everglades and the legendary fishing and diving of the Florida Keys. It's quite a cosmopolitan place with a good mix of people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.

One of the main attractions is the climate in Fort Myers. It's between subtropical and tropical and there are 271 days of sunshine in an average year. Sunscreen is important but you'll find yourself wanting to spend time outdoors even in the middle of winter. In fact, Harvey Firestone, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison all had winter estates here and today the city is home to countless professional athletes.

The weather in Fort Myers is at its best in spring. This is when the mercury reaches the eighties and there is little enough rainfall to make you want to be on the beach or in the water as often as possible. If you prefer being on the sidelines, head to the stadiums where the Minnesota Twins or the Boston Red Sox have their pre-season training. Otherwise, admire the fluttering critters that have found sanctuary at the Butterfly Estates.

Come summer, you'll find that the Fort Myers weather heats up well into the upper nineties. Humidity rises too but luckily there are frequent thunderstorms and quick, heavy showers to cool things down a bit. If you're planning on going out to sea, it's wise to check the weather forecast since there may be hurricanes that cause rough seas and very strong winds.

The cooler months are perfect for outdoor pursuits such as golfing, biking or hiking. This is the dry season, which means that humidity levels are much more comfortable too. Maximum temperatures hover in the upper seventies or so but at night, the temperature rarely drops to below 50 degrees. It's a good season to visit the winter estates of Edison and Ford to see just why they preferred Florida this time of year.

The city has every facility you can dream of, with plenty of restaurants and bars, especially along the waterfront in the downtown area. On those days when you want to give your skin a rest from the sun's rays, you'll find a good selection of retail outlets, among them the Edison Mall. Another good way to spend a day is with a visit to the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium or to the Imaginarium Science Center. Public transport is good and you'll also find that this is a very bicycle-friendly city.

Accommodation is easy to find and you'll find a range of options for different budgets. You may also contact a real-estate agent about properties for rent or even to buy so you can have your own winter estate. Southwest Florida International Airport is the gateway to the city and you can fly in directly from most major American cities, as well as from Canada and Germany.
