Nigeria Flag And Its History

By Albert Derrick

The national flag of Nigeria was actually designed in the year 1960 by Mr. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, who was then a student studying in London. His ensign of the national flag was adjudged as the best among the other entries for prestigious National Flag Design Competition held at the university campus. The then Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, M.A. Martins like this ensign and passed a proposal to adopt this design as the national flag of Nigeria.

The Fulani empire ruled the region from the beginning of the 19th century until the British annexed Lagos in 1851 and seized control of the rest of the region by 1886. It formally became the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria in 1914. During World War I, native troops of the West African frontier force joined with French forces to defeat the German garrison in Cameroon.

A design by a Nigerian student named Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi was chosen in 1959 from almost 3,000 entries. The flag of Nigeria consists of three equal sized vertical stripes - the right and left stripe are green; and the middle stripe is white.

The flag has two unique colors which mean different things. Green-The sea green in the Nigerian flag represents Agriculture, forest, natural resources. As it is known Nigeria is a blessed nation with abundance natural recourse, it is also reached in agriculture with good land for cultivation, a favourable climate for the rearing of animals and with a more natural abundance of which the sea green color in the Nigeria flag represents.

Nigerian law makes deems it an offense for the Nigerian Flag to be improperly used or displayed. Law states that: "Any person who flies or exhibits the National Flag in a defaced or bad condition shall be guilty of an offense against this Ordinance."

Thus, the national flag of Nigeria truly reflects the Nigerian nationalistic fervor and sentiments. There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Nigeria flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Nigeria flag for the future.
