El Nino Home Preparedness

By Cletus Jackson

The El Nino Season is officially heading to California! For the past few years, California was in a drought; yet with the impending storms from El Nino on their way, flash floods and heavy rain could be on the menu for California residents. Some safety inspections of your home are in order so that you can make it through the storms safely.

Just like how skin keeps a lot of harmful substances out of the core of your body, the same goes for the roof of your home. The roof is the existential barrier between your home and the elements. Proper roof inspection should always start out with an initial damage report, which is mostly just a look-over of the whole condition of the roof. This could be done yourself if you are the courageous type, or you could always hire a professional to do it. Old or damaged roof decking needs to be repaired as soon as possible. Any damage to the shingles and under layers - including cupping shingles - should be taken care of for good home maintenance of the "outer skin" of your house.

It can be easy to take water proofing around your home for granted, since it is usually only around wet seasons that it comes to mind. If there are improperly sealed segments around your home, this can lead to dangerous foundation shifts, and leaks in the basement. If leaks are already occurring, the basement should be cleared up and sealed properly so that the large rains are more manageable. Any caulking around doors and windows can become cracked or thinned, so it should be repaired or replaced if needed.

Alongside caulking, window and door frames can shift around to cause water and air leaks. Air leaks can be detected by sealing off the house to any outside air, turning on kitchen and air vents, and using some kind of gentle smoke to see if any drafts are pushing into the house. Windows that are loose with gaps will rattle a little when shaken gently. Also, do a visual inspection to find any cracks or gaps around window and door sealants that lead to the outside air. Even skylights can reveal leaks where in air or water are coming in, if there is a brown stain around the wall it means that there is a leak.

Before you know it, the big El Nino storms will be right next door, so these potential problems should be found as soon as possible. While looking at your roof, waterproofing your home, and fixing your windows and doors can sometimes be done yourself, it is recommended that if you need assistance in any of these steps contact a professional to keep your home cozy and warm.

Look to your nearest supplier for home repair in California to get your home storm ready as soon as possible!
